In this print, a racist exclamation dissolves gradually leaving just a trace, reflecting the fleeting nature of such encounters and the impunity of the perpetrator. About the Artist Sonia Boyce OBE RA (b.1962) is Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. In 1987, she became the first Black woman to enter the Tate’s collection when it acquired her drawing Missionary Position II (1985); in 2016 she was elected as a Royal Academician and in 2019 she was awarded an OBE for her services to art. This edition has been produced on the occasion of The Botanical Mind: Art, Mysticism and The Cosmic Tree at Camden Art Centre, 2020/2021. About the work'While she was still speaking, the soil covered her shins; roots, breaking from her toes, spread sideways, supporting a tall trunk; her bones strengthened, and in the midst of the remaining marrow, the blood became sap; her arms became long branches; her fingers, twigs; her skin, solid bark.' - Ovid: Metamorphoses. Book X:431-502 Orpheus sings: Myrrha’s crime and punishment About the artistLinder Sterling (b. 1954, Liverpool, UK) is known for her photography, radical feminist photomontage and confrontational performance art. Emerging from the Manchester punk and post-punk scenes in the 1970s, Sterling focuses on questions of gender, commodity and display. Her highly recognisable photomontage practice combines everyday images from domestic or fashion magazines with images from pornography and other archival material. Cut and collaged by hand using a scalpel and glue, the juxtapositions recall a rich art history harking back to Hannah Hoch and the Dadaists. She has learned about natural dyes during her childhood in rural Alsace (France) from her grandmother and later while living in India and travelling to Japan. For over a decade now, Johanna has focused on exploring botanical dyes on reclaimed cellulose fabrics in several of her art projects, of which the series ‘Penser, Manger, Partager’ is perhaps most well-known. Johanna continues to learn and explore natural dyes in England and during her travels. In addition, Johanna founded the collaborative initiatives Poetic Pastel Press and The Gardening Drawing Club, the latter of which includes a Community Dye Plant Plot in Oxfordshire.
