It was made by Mr. Xie Yuan Zai, who has made many of our teas over the years and is one of our teachers (You can read more about him on our farmers page and in the magazine.) Dawn comes from bug-bitten, “honey-fragrance (mi xiang)” red. The tea was withered for a long time, rolled for a long time and then piled once more before roasting it dry. The long withering ensures the deep oxidation needed for making red tea. It is deep, dark and extremely fragrant. The grinding brings out a lot of the flavors and fragrances, making this tea a powerful drink and wonderful for cooking with. (There are a lot of wonderful desserts you can make with Dawn, some of which we shared in the January 2019 issue of the magazine.) Each tin is 150 grams. We were able to get our hands on a few more cakes of this legendary tea that so many of you know and love. Joy is a well-aged Dian Hong from 2001. It was produced by a friend of ours on one of his first trips to Yunnan, using old-growth raw material from Lincang, which was more affordable in those days. It is our all-time favorite Dian Hong. This tea was compressed very tightly so a small amount opens up quite a bit. The tea is malty, rich and deep with a powerful and very joyous Yang energy. Each cake is approximately 500g. There is no way to verify the vintage of aged loose-leaf teas. While this tea might be that old, we don’t really know. Many such teas are also blends of multiple teas. What we can say is that this tea is indeed well-aged and has a deep and rich liquor with flavors of ginseng, Chinese herbs and all the other wonders of aged sheng tea. It has a marvelous energy that is festive and abundant. You may want to check out the album of the same name while drinking this magical tea! It is old-growth puerh that was piled in a very special way. Shou puerh is piled and sprayed with water, then covered with a thermal blanket and fermented. Instead of spraying the piled leaves with water, this tea was sprayed with an infusion of aloeswood and sweet rice leaves. There is therefore no aloeswood or rice leaves in the tea, just an infusion of these herbs used to pile the tea. This lends the tea a very subtle fragrance and sweetness that is exquisite. When we first learned of this tea, we thought that it would be gimmicky or perhaps that the infusion would be strong and the tea would taste too much of those, drowning out the tea. However, we were shocked at how subtle and delicious the added fragrance and sweetness makes this tea. Oud is a creamy, thick shou puerh with just a hint of aloeswood in the fragrance of the cup and a slight sweetness in the liquor, both of which do not overpower the flavors, aromas or energy of the tea. The Qi of this tea is deep and internal. Overall, this is one of the most special and delicious shou puerh teas we have ever tried. Each cake is 100 grams. Oud was also pressed as a larger cake in 2019. Both versions are now sold out, and we keep this page here for those lucky enough to still have some in their tea cupboard.
